DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A DRINKING WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM IN ALBANIA
Durrës, home to the largest port in Albania and with a population of 150,000 inhabitants; is located in a flat alluvial plain just off the Adriatic coast in the central west of the country (Durrës district).
In order to provide the inhabitants with access to drinking water and ensure sufficient supplies during the important tourist season, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure contracted PWT Wasser- und Abwassertechnik to build a new water supply system consisting of production wells, a pumping station, new reservoirs and a transmission pipeline. Also included in the works was the refurbishment of existing reservoirs.
This new system has the capacity to supply 620l/s of drinking water directly to the reservoirs in the city.
CONSTRUCTION OF 75 KM OF DN 700 PIPELINES FOR A DRINKING WATER SYSTEM
To provide drinking water to the inhabitants of Durrës, seven new production wells were developed with a total capacity of 770 l/s. A total of 75 km of DN 700 GRP pipe was laid from the wells to the city of Durrës. The main transmission pipeline crossed rivers and highways along its route. To over come these obsticles, a combination of micro tunneling and the construction of elevated pipe bridges were used. PWT also successfuly completed the refurbishment of five water reservoirs ranging in size from 100m³ to 1500m³ capacity.
A main pumping station with a capacity of 620 l/s was constructed along with a chlorination system to disinfect the drinking water and a breake pressure tank with a volume of 600 m3. A 20 kV, 15 km long power line for the pumping station was also constructed as part of these works. A SCADA system was implemented for the control and supervision of the new assets.
